Varsity Reds as a Family Tradition
It means a lot to parents for their children to go to the same university that they went to. This is because they want a guarantee that their children will have a great experience. UNB has been an example of this for many families, most of all for the Spicer family and the El-Khoury family. Meggie Spicer and Sandra El-Khoury are members of the women’s soccer team at UNB. Spicer’s father, Peter, and El-Khoury’s Uncle, Pierre, were members of the UNB men’s soccer team who won 1980 CIS championship.
Pierre El-Khoury and Peter Spicer both had great experiences with the Varsity Reds and hope the same for their legacies. Pierre says, “The team of 1980 was a confident team and were used to winning by the time they got to the CIS championship”. Pierre describes the close knit team they had and how they still keep in touch.
Spicer’s Godfather, Doug Cockrin, was also a V-Red for soccer at this time. El-Khoury’s father and other uncle were both members of UNB soccer as well. Her father, Gabriel, chose to continue with wrestling after two years of playing both soccer and wrestling. Spicer says, “Since I was a little girl my father always said I would come to UNB and that Andy Cameron would be my coach”. Both the El-Khoury family and the Spicer family have had many family members attend UNB and have taken advantage and been successful in our/their athletic programs.
El-Khoury says she is very “privileged to have the opportunity to continue the family tradition” of attending UNB and being a Varsity Red. El-Khoury’s dad, Gabriel, says he is “indeed very proud to have the opportunity to watch [his] daughter, Sandra, play for the V-Reds”. He has gone to all of UNB’s home games and Sandra is proud to wear a Reds jersey and bring back special memories for her family.
Peter Spicer has been to every game so far this season. Peter and his family currently live in Nova Scotia. He says, “Now for the next five years we have a great excuse to come back to UNB to relive some of the best memories and watch Meggie and the Varsity Reds”. Spicer is in the same faculty as her father was when he went to UNB, Physical Education, now known as Kinesiology. She is in the Recreation and Sport Studies program. Spicer plans on teaching physical education or becoming a high level coach.
