Reds Fall In AUS Quarter-Final
Memorial scores 79-70 win
(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB Reds fell 79-70 to the Memorial Sea-Hawks in the quarter-finals at the 2019 Subway Atlantic University Sport Women's Basketball Championship.
Sydney Stewart (Sarnia, ON) scored 32 points to lead the Sea-Hawks. She was named the Subway Player of the Game.
Momentum swings dominated the early going that saw Memorial build an early lead, but the Reds were able to remain close.
After one quarter of play, UNB trailed the Sea-Hawks 12-11.
By late in the second quarter, the momentum had swung back in the Reds favour.
On the strength of Mikaela Dodig's (Bolton, ON) field goal shooting and Grace Simpson's (Fredericton, NB) inside work, UNB went up 26-21.
But a short run by the Sea-Hawks allowed them to take a 32-28 lead into the half.
Memorial's aggressive play continued in the third quarter.
Mid-way through the third, Memorial led 47-36.
UNB's Eva Tumwine (Fredericton, NB) appeared to put the Reds on her back for a stretch, scoring on three consecutive possessions to cut in to the 'Hawks lead.
Memorial, however, was able to restore a nine point edge as the third quarter ended, going up 56-47 on the Reds.
In the final quarter, the Reds climbed to within four, 60-56, but the Sea-Hawks were relentless and re-established their game and their lead, pulling away for the 79-70 win.
Tumwine led the Reds with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Dodig scored 15 and Simpson added 10.
Ja'Yon Leak (Charlotte, NC) came off the UNB bench to score nine points and deliver five assists.
