UNB Schoolâ??s Out Shootout takes place this weekend on the Fredericton campus.
June 12, 2012
The opportunity to face new challenges, new teammates, new coaches and new adventures awaits many who opt to play club basketball.
Once regular season basketball finishes its season from October through March, the popularity of club basketball takes over for a couple of months and the University of New Brunswick Junior Varsity Reds program is proof of that.
The Junior V-Reds program is now in its third year of operation under general manager Jeff Speedy and a litany of UNB-related basketball coaches.
Speedy, the head coach of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s UNB Varsity Reds women’s team, has two mini girls’ teams and a pair of bantam girls’ squads under the umbrella this season.
The teams play a number of exhibition games within the province and also branch into tournament play with visits to Boston and Halifax along with hosting their own UNB School’s Out Shootout event this weekend.
A total of 23 teams are entered this weekend and will play out of the Richard Currie Center and Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium.
The program is not financially affiliated with the UNB women’s program, but it does offer brand recognition and allows a number of present day and former Varsity Reds the chance to delve into coaching. Laura Fowler is the Head Coach with the bantam A girls, with Coach Speedy serving as her assistant. Current V-Reds Melissa Foster and former UNB star Leah (Corby) Bowers have combined to guide the mini A girls.
“It’s an opportunity for many players to continue playing basketball for an extra couple of months under competitive and learning initiatives,” said Speedy. “Playing games are a bonus. We compete hard and push the players but are really trying to focus on player development and not winning games or tournament. Hopefully our players are improving and will use this experience as a springboard to next season’s competitive teams.”
There are club teams all over the province and throughout Canada at this time of year.
Where some players may go head-to-head all season for their respective teams, many come together with the UNB program as teammates.
New teammates become new friends.
“It’s great to see a lot of the girls who may be rivals throughout the winter become teammates and perhaps discover they have a lot in common and become friends,” said Speedy. “It brings the basketball community closer together and meshes parents, coaches and players in one group. Club basketball has become very popular. Having 23 teams in our tournament in mid-June is outstanding, but it also shows there’s a commitment from not just us, but from many to keep the players playing.”
