Reds Relays Run Well At NB Indoors
(SAINT JOHN, NB) It was quite a weekend for the UNB Reds track and field team, at the NB Indoor Championships, at the Irving Oil Field House, in Saint John.
The Reds scored a combined nine victories, including three men's relay triumphs.
Jarod Manuel led the UNB effort winning both the men's weight throw and the shot put, where he registered a season-best 15.17 metres. That ranks Manuel first in Atlantic University Sport, and 7th in U SPORTS.
In the weight throw, UNB's Thayne Hebb finished second.
The Reds won the men's 4 X 200 metre, 4 X 400 metre, and 4 X 800 metre relays.
In the 4 X 800, the UNB foursome ran 7:58.10, the second fastest time in the AUS this season, and a new Reds record.
UNB women took second in the women's 4 X 400 metres.
"It was great to see how far our relay program has come," said Reds head coach Chris Belof. "All the relays performed very well. We rested some athletes this weekend and will be looking to have a solid block of training and recovery as we head into the AUS Championships."
The Reds swept the men's 600 metres, with Ben Perrett finishing in 1:22.19, Tyler Adams in 1:23.64, and Bailey Ferguson in 1:23.65.
Ryan Olson won the men's pole vault.
Robert Williamson was second in the men's long jump, while Michael Colford ran third in the men's 3000-metres, Adrian Kinney was third in the men's 60 metres, and Eric Hughes was second in the men's 60 metre hurdles.
Erin McCavour led the UNB women, winning the women's triple jump, with a season and personal best of 11.38 metres. McCavour is ranked 2nd in the AUS in the event. She also won the women's long jump.
In the women's 600 metres, Robyn Davis ran second, while Magkada Mekonnen was third.
Tavia Salkey finished second in the women's 300 metres, in a new UNB record time of 41.43 seconds. She also established a new Reds record in the women's 60 metres, running 7.92 seconds in the preliminaries.
"As we head into the championship portion of the season, both the men's and women's teams are looking poised to perform well," said Belof. "This was a great weekend to see where our team stacked up against AUS competition. We still have work to do but this weekend's results are very encouraging."
