Kenny Leads REDS
(HALIFAX, NS) Élodie Martin and Emma Sinclair swam to victories for the UNB REDS on day two of the Kemp-Fry Invitational, at Dalhousie University. The meet is the third event on the 2023-2024 Atlantic University Sport swimming schedule.
Martin outraced the eight-swimmer field in the ‘A’ final of the women’s 50-metre freestyle, beating second place by 4/10ths of a second. UNB’s Hannah MacLeod was eighth.
“We’ve been training quite hard leading up to this meet and it’s paying off,” said Martin. “I always attribute the support of my teammates and our coaching staff to my success. These results definitely give me a boost as we head toward the AUS Championships.”
Sinclair, a first-year RED, won the women’s 100-metre butterfly, edging Memorial’s Heidi Perry by just 15/100ths of a second. UNB’s Jessie Collett swam fifth, less than 7/10ths of a second back of Sinclair’s winning time.
“I was nervous, as a rookie,” said Sinclair. “It’s different, compared to age group swimming, with so much more energy in the crowd and among the teams. Winning felt good and it was great to show up for my team.”
Collett recorded a podium finish in the women’s 200-metre freestyle, finishing third in an eight-swimmer field that featured six Dal Tigers.
Martin, Sinclair, and Collett then teamed with Sophie Casey for a third place finish in the women’s 4-by-100-metre freestyle relay. UNB finished behind teams from Dal and Acadia.
On the men’s side of the competition, Maxime Kenny was fourth in the men’s 200-metre backstroke, Blake Kingston was seventh in the men’s 100-metre breaststroke, and Craig Bush posted 7th and 8th place finishes in the men’s 100-metre butterfly and 200-metre freestyle events respectively.
After two days of competition, the REDS sit fourth in both the women’s and men’s team standings.
The Kemp-Fry Invitational wraps up Sunday with preliminaries at 10:00am and finals at 4:30pm.
