Kammerer Coming To REDS Blue Line
(FREDERICTON, NB) The defending Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey champions, the UNB REDS, are adding veteran defenceman Colton Kammerer to their recruiting class of 2022.
Kammerer, captain of the 2022 Ontario Hockey League champs and Memorial Cup finalists, the Hamilton Bulldogs, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of their upcoming training camp.
“The culture that Coach MacDougall and the rest of the staff have built here was a key factor in my decision,” said the native of Brooklin, Ontario. “I want to win a national championship and I still have pro hockey ambitions. I feel UNB gives me the best opportunity to make both happen.”
Kammerer spent three seasons with the OHL’s Sarnia Sting before being traded to Hamilton for the 2021-2022 season.
In 189 regular season OHL games, he tallied 12 goals and 38 assists.
“Colton is a huge addition to our blue line,” said REDS head coach Gardiner MacDougall. “He’s a strong defensive defenceman that is very hard to play against. He has a tremendous attitude, work ethic and strong leadership abilities. Colton excels in the defensive zone, is a top notch penalty killer and is a team-first difference maker.”
The 20-year-old suffered a season-ending knee injury in the OHL Final and underwent surgery this summer.
“That was a huge blow to Hamilton, and it’ll mean he’ll miss the first half of our AUS season, but we’re very happy to have Colton joining us this season,” said MacDougall.
“I had other options, but after speaking with people here and visiting the school, UNB seemed like a no-brainer,” said Kammerer. “I’ll bring my ability to move the puck and shut down other team’s top players. I look forward to becoming one of the many leaders on the team.”
While new to UNB, Kammerer is already familiar with some members of the REDS, having played previously with forward Ryan Roth, and knowing Kade Landry and Macauley Carson through mutual friends.
Kammerer has a number of short-term goals, but says, long-term, he wants to help UNB win national championships, earn his degree and graduate to professional hockey.
Kammerer will study business while attending UNB.
