REDS Swept Out Of AUS Championships
(WINDSOR, NS) The UNB REDS men's curling team's run at the Atlantic University Sport Championships came to an end Friday, after two losses, to the Dalhousie Tigers and Memorial Sea-Hawks.
UNB dropped their first match of the day to a strong Dal squad, 7-2.
The teams traded points early on with Dalhousie holding the lead 4-3 after 4 ends. The REDS scored a double in the 2nd end and a single point in the 4th end.
In the second half of the match, Dal took over, scoring a single in the 5th end before stealing points in the 6th and 7th ends, after the REDS missed some key shots down the stretch.
"I thought we played well in this game," said REDS skip Alex Gallant. "We hung with them. They're probably the team to beat here and I'm pretty proud of our performance. We would've wanted the win, but it just didn't work out for us this time."
In their second game, UNB fell to Memorial 9-1.
The turning point came early, when the REDS attempted a steal in the second end. Gallant missed his draw attempt, which led to a 5-point end for the Sea-Hawks.
UNB was unable to recover and shook hands after 6 ends.
"We went pretty hard for the steal in two. Looking back, we probably shouldn't have done that. But we were looking to push the envelope early and force some misses, but unfortunately, we missed, and they didn't," said Gallant.
Even though the results weren't what they had hoped for, the REDS were happy to get back on the ice after an almost two-year layoff from competitive play.
"It was just really fun to play again," said Gallant. "It's been over two years since we've played anything competitive. Not the results we wanted, especially for the school, but we're hoping the girls' team can pull something out for us."
