REDS Bounce Panthers In Exhibition Play
(FREDERICTON, NB) The new-look UNB REDS outpaced the visiting UPEI Panthers 70-55 in exhibition Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action on Sunday.
The game, at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center, drew more than 350 spectators.
Third-year guard Reese Zorogole (Halifax, NS) got the REDS started just shy of the 90-second mark with a finger roll lay in to open the scoring.
UPEI held a slim 15-12 lead after ten minutes.
In the second quarter, the REDS switched gears, outscoring the Panthers 21-8 to take a 33-23 lead into the half-time break.
The REDS continued their aggressive play in the second half, leading 58-33 after three quarters and 70-55 at the final buzzer.
Second-year REDS guard Marcus Barnes (Kitchener, ON) led all scorers with 15 points earning Tim Horton's Player of the Game honours. Barnes also had 10 rebounds.
Vegas Evans added 11 points, while UNB newcomers Javordo Mitchell (Woodbridge, ON) and Mattias Muscroft (Sussex, NB) showed well in their debuts. Mitchell pulled down 12 rebounds and Muscroft scored 12 points off the bench.
Jace Colley (East Preston, NS) led the Panthers with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Kamari Scott (Mississauga, ON) dropped 13 points.
The REDS continue their exhibition schedule Thursday when they face Acadia, in Rothesay. Game time is 7:00pm.
The Panthers will host the OUA's York Lions on Friday as part of UPEI's Mickey Place Tournament.
