Upset USports No. 10 Huskies
(HALIFAX, NS) The visiting UNB Varsity Reds defeated the U Sports No. 10 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies 83-79 Friday night, in AUS men's basketball action.
Javon Masters(Kitchener, ON) had 22 points in UNB's win and moved past SMU's Brian Thompson(1,679 points 1987/88-1991/92) for fourth all-time in AUS scoring, with 1,696 points.
Third on the list is UPEI's Sherone Edwards with 1,698 points(2002/03-2006/07). Fred Perry(1996/97-2000/01) from St. FX, with 1,741, is second, and Curtis Robinson's 2,069 points(1991/92-1995/96) makes the UPEI Panther the all-time leader… for now.
The Varisty Reds led 20-17 after ten minutes.
Saint Mary's outscored UNB 23-15 in the second quarter, and took a 40-35 lead into the half.
Both teams drew even in the third quarter, and the Huskies held onto their five-point lead, 65-60 after thirty minutes.
The Varsity Reds took control in the final frame, outscoring the Huskies 23-14 down the stretch, winning 83-79.
UNB improves to 3-2 while Saint Mary's drops to 3-2 on the year.
Donnavan Hastings(Brampton, ON) added 17 points for UNB while Hess Mayele(Montreal, QC) had 15 and Jamaal Potopsingh(Brampton, ON) 11.
Marquis Clayton(Halifax, NS) paced Saint Mary's with 24 points, in 37 minutes, while Brian Rouse(Mississauga, ON) and Theon Reefer(Toronto, ON) each had 18 points off the bench in the loss.
Both teams return to action Saturday. UNB visits 3-2 Acadia, and SMU hosts 1-4 UPEI. Tip-off for both games is 8:00PM.
