Tyrel Edwards Joins Varsity Reds
(FREDERICTON, NB) Tyrel Edwards has played alongside some of this country’s best.
He counts current NBAers Cory Joseph and Tristan Thompson among his former teammates.
Edwards played much of his high school basketball at Huntington Prep, the school that produced Minnesota Timberwolves’ star Andrew Wiggins.
A 6’5” guard, Edwards is bringing his game to Fredericton, having signed a CIS Letter of Intent to join the Varsity Reds.
“At the end of the day, being a team is like being one, big family,” said Edwards.
The 24-year old comes to UNB after time at Dalton State College and Canisius College, in the United States.
He plans to study psychology and history.
“I hope to help this basketball program win a conference championship.”
Edwards should provide some skill and excitement.
He says, since high school, he’s won a number of slam dunk competitions, including the dunk contest at last year’s NBBL(North of the Border Basketball League) All-Star Game.
"I think Tyrel's versatility will be the most important element that he'll bring to our line-up,” said Varsity Reds head coach Brent Baker. “His ability to guard multiple positions, attack the basket and shoot the ball with range make him a valuable asset for our squad.”
Baker feels Edwards, and other members of the recruiting class, can balance UNB’s game.
“With Tyrel and the other new additions, hopefully, we can relieve some of the pressure on Javon(Masters) to score at a high rate on a nightly basis."
