REDS Blow Past Hurricanes
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS women’s rugby team used a second-half surge, scoring 26 points to earn a 40-26 win over the Holland College Hurricanes on Sunday afternoon, at UNB’s College Field.
“We really played as a team today and executed plays with determination,” said UNB back Alicia Simmie. “Communication was good, and we hustled right till the last minute”
The Hurricanes fought hard to keep the score close in the first half as UNB held a slim 14-12 through the first 40 minutes.
Coming out of the break, the REDS offense finally found its footing helping UNB pull ahead with a comfortable lead.
Simmie and veteran Taylor McAuley led the way for UNB. Both scored two tries, while Kate Bennet converted on five of her kicks. Ella Myers and Megan Stewart also added tries for UNB.
“It was a hard-fought game for both teams and we’ve certainly seen growth from both sides since we last faced off,” said McAuley. “Ultimately, we’ve been working really hard on our defense and working as a team, and I think it paid off in the end.”
Tori Hogan and Rachel MacKay were the lone scorers for the Hurricanes, both had two tries on the day.
The win improves UNB’s record to a perfect 6-and-0, and has them one win away from locking up first place in the ACAA regular season standings.
The REDS face their cross-town rivals, the St. Thomas Tommies, on Sunday, October 23, at 2:00pm, on the turf at the Grant-Harvey Complex, in their regular-season finale.
