Bishop Leads REDS In Wolfville
(UNDATED) The UNB REDS posted some decent results at a pair of cross country meets on the weekend.
The team sent contingents to the Acadia Invitational, in Wolfville, NS, and the Vigars & Salter Invitation, in London, ON, hosted by Western University.
In London, UNB's Jared Howse ran to an impressive third place finish in the men's eight-kilometre event.
In the field of 147 featuring top talent from across the country, Howse finished 7.2 seconds behind race winner Nicholas Banner, of the Guelph Gryphons, and just three second back of runner-up Andrew Davies, from UBC.
"The race went really well, individually and for the team," said Howse. "I went out with the front group and was patient, but slowly went up to the front to lead as it progressed and managed to hang on for the last kilometre for third overall."
Howse's top three finish helped UNB to a fourth-place finish in the team standings.
Other REDS finishers included William Boyle, who ran 25th, Mitchell Kean, who was 30th, and Isaac Cull, who ran to 36th place.
In the women's eight-kilometre race, first-year RED Olivia Baggley was the top UNB finisher, running 29th in the field of 132.
The UNB women finished 10th in the team standings.
Other REDS finishers included Sierra Rodrigues, who was 32nd, and Georgia Bernhard, who ran 33rd.
At the Acadia meet, Hilary Bishop ran to a 5th place finish over the eight-kilometre course, helping UNB to fourth in the women's team event.
UNB's Ivy Bialowis was 11th.
Other REDS finishers included Morgan Tiede, in 21st, and Megan Koski who ran 35th in the field of 58.
In the men's 8K event, UNB's Ben Perrett was fifth in the 47-runner field.
Stephen Anderson was the second RED across the line, finishing 26th, while Ian Young was 31st.
"I'm pleased with both team performances," said Chris Belof, head coach of the REDS. "The men showed they're a top ten U SPORTS program, but certainly have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. We're excited for both groups to compete at our upcoming meet and then the Atlantic University Sport Championships, in Halifax."
Up next for the REDS is the UNB Invitational, at Kingswood, on October 7th. The women go at 12:00pm. The men's head to the line for a 1:00pm start. The meet will feature AUS and RSEQ teams competing in an inter-lock event."
