Tigers Drop V-Reds 3-0
Dal over UNB in straight sets
(HALIFAX, NS) In the first of four regular season matches against each other, the Dalhousie Tigers beat the UNB Varsity Reds 3-0, in Halifax, on Saturday evening.
It was a game of runs throughout the match as both teams strung together points well, but the Tigers came away with the straight sets victory.
The match started back and forth, but at 7-5 the Tigers made a massive run, picking up the next 12 points. The run was due in large part to the serving of Mieke DuMont(Kamloops, BC), who served five consecutive aces.
The Tigers took the first set quickly, 25-10.
UNB looked like a completely different team starting the second set.
They were strong offensively, with Kristen Burns(Mississauga, ON) picking up kills and contributing with her serve.
Megan Kuciak(Ottawa, ON) and Julia Diemert(Egbert, ON) gave UNB the first few points out of the technical time-out, but the Tigers won eight of the next nine points in the set, winning 25-18.
The Varsity Reds came out hard in the third set, jumping out to a 6-3 lead with kills from Kuciak and Kelsey Bond(Bridgewater, NS), forcing the Tigers to call a time-out.
Dal rallied to take the third set 25-17.
Burns led UNB offensively with a match-high eight kills.
Dal's Emma Ciprick(Binscarth, MB) was named the Subway Player of the Match. She had seven kills and seven digs.
The Tigers host Acadia Sunday, while the Varsity Reds visit Saint Mary's.
