V-Reds Women's Volleyball kicks off the season with a win
October 27, 2012
As far as home openers go, the Varsity Reds women’s volleyball game on Saturday was quite the battle. With three of the five sets being within three points, the teams seemed very well matched. With the V-Reds scoring the first point, it was clear they wanted control of the game. However, the Capers quickly showed they wanted to win just as bad.
With both teams focused on the sets ahead, every bump, volley and return seemed crucial. Celina Abba and Vanja Mitrovic were power-housing at the nets, sending spike after spike raining down on the Capers, maintaining tenacity regardless of the occasional block and returns. As momentum rose for the -VReds, they battled victoriously for the first two sets, taking the first 25-23 and the second 25-15.
Momentum broke entering the third set. When asked, Coach Goulet said that the difference in this set was due to the fact that “Cape Breton started adjusting their offence to match our (V-Reds) defence, but our girls did a great job keeping the pressure on.”
Midway through the set, UNB was down 16-6. They went on to lose the set by only two, the set ending at 26-24 for the Capers, forcing the game into a fourth set. The fourth set kept The -VReds and the Capers very tight in points. Ending rallies were the deciding factor of this set, CBU sneaking in a couple points and ending the lengthy rallying. They pulled ahead and took the set 25-22, forcing the game to a 5th and final deciding set. UNB got back into the groove during the final set, with a few ace serves, and powerful returns. The V-Reds won the set 15-4 and took the game.
