Varsity Reds take the win over the Huskies
January 26, 2013
The Varsity Reds faced the AUS third ranked Huskies this afternoon at the RJCC. Having lost yesterday to the Dalhousie Tigers, the V-Reds wanted the win against SMU’s Huskies.
The first set, the V-Reds came out strong, with three ace serves in a row, letting the Huskies know that they meant business. The set continued as the V-Reds showed a phenomenal defensive and blocking set, with big blocks from player of the game, Celina Abba, Paige Paulsen and Rebecca Glancy, also some spectacular digs from Monica Jones, Emma Hunt, Paige Neimes and Vanja Mitrovic.
With more ace serves and the pressure at the net holding strong, the V-Reds took the first set 20-25.
The second set demonstrated how effective the V-Reds were off the serve, with many points coming from the offensive efforts with powerful kills from Vanja Mitrovic and Rebecca Glancy.
With Paige Paulsen setting perfectly to the middles, and Celina Abba continuing to excel at the net, the V-Reds took the second set 25-15.
The third set the Huskies fought back, with, in coach Goulet’s mind.. “The V-Reds block’s started to break just enough to make the difference, and there’s a certain chemistry between blocking and the overall defensive game.”
This led to points earned for the Huskies, their player of the game, Ariel Smith, had 15 kills and their points in the third quarter reflected that, as Saint Mary's took the third set 25-22 forcing the game to a fourth.
Having lost the third set, the V-Reds put more attention into the front row, keeping pace with the Huskies’ serves and kills, earning the majority of points off of continuous blocks from Celina Abba, and Rebecca Glancy.
Having strengthened their block again, the defensive game improved instantaneously, fending off attempts by the Huskies, digs from Tessa Geurts, Megan Dudeck and Paige Neimes kept the V-Reds ahead the majority of the fourth set.
With the score tied at 19-19, Celina Abba saw that it was time to act, pounding kill after kill raining down on the Huskies, bringing the score to 23-19. With an ace serve from Paige Paulsen earning the 25th point, UNB took the set and the match 25-19.
The Varsity Reds next games in on February 2nd as they take on StFX in UNB's Think Pink weekend at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER.
