Martin Swims To Gold At AUS Championships
(HALIFAX, NS) Blake Kingston and Èlodie Martin captured gold medals for the UNB REDS Saturday, the second day of competition at the 2024 Atlantic University Sport Swimming Championships, in Halifax.
Martin won the women's 50-metre freestyle in a time of 26.52 seconds, slightly faster than Acadia's Sara Bennett, who finished in 26.65 seconds.
"Coming here as a second year student-athlete and winning is absolutely amazing," said Martin. "This is just the beginning, we have so much more to show."
Kingston scored his second gold medal of the weekend in the men's 200-metre breaststroke. Kingston's time of 2:16.21 also qualified him to compete in the event at the U SPORTS Championships, in Montreal, March 7-9.
"It was a big day for our team," he said. "Our whole team had huge swims and I'm super proud of our whole team."
In the men's 100-metre backstroke, UNB's Max Kenny took the bronze medal and in the women's 4-by-200-metre freestyle relay, UNB won bronze with Martin, Sophie Casey, Emma Sinclair, and Jessie Collett.
"Our men had a good final session today," said REDS' head coach Marta Belsh. "Our women missed a few swims this morning, so we ended up with fewer swimmers in A finals."
The UNB women are currently fifth in the team standings while the men are third.
The final day of competition goes Sunday with prelims at 10:00am and finals at 6:00pm.
"We're looking forward to Sunday," said Coach Belsh. "We have exciting races coming on the women's side and we're looking to move up in the standings."
