(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS women’s swimming team is adding Lexie Quinn to their recruiting class of 2023.

The 17-year-old, from Sydney, Nova Scotia, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2023-2024 Atlantic University Sport season.

“Lexie is an accomplished swimmer who we feel can contribute right away to our team program,” said REDS’ head coach Marta Belsh. “We’re excited to have her joining us and look forward to seeing how she progresses with our group.”

Quinn is finishing her Grade 12 year at the Sydney Academy and is a veteran member of the Cape Breton Dorados Swim Team.

“The REDS have shown me that they have a great team environment,” said Quinn. “They work hard, they’re bold and they’re very supportive.”

Quinn was named her club’s swimmer of the year award in 2018 and 2020, having previously won the club’s rookie of the year, outstanding effort and president’s choice awards.

She’s participated in Nova Scotia’s AAA championships every year since 2018, earned top age group swimmer honours in 2019, and holds club records in 50-metre freestyle, backstroke and butterfly events for swimmers 15-17 years old.

“I’m hard-working, so no matter what we’re doing, I’m going to do my best,” she said. “I’m loud, so I can be great to have in the cheer squad on deck.”

“Lexie has shown that she can compete and we expect that to continue with us,” said Coach Belsh. “She’ll fit in well with our group and we expect her to make an impact at this level.”

Short-term, Quinn wants to improve her skills and her times. Long-term, she wants to be successful at the AUS Championships and post U SPORTS Championship qualifying times.

She’ll study Kinesiology while attending UNB.
