Tigers Edge REDS
(HALIFAX, NS) The Dalhousie Tigers got a late goal to score a 2-1 win over the UNB REDS Saturday, in Halifax, and it did not take long for Tigers' fans to get on their feet.
In the seventh minute, Dal midfielder Morgan Leon (Toronto, ON) put a ball so high up into the air that caused UNB keeper Lauren Kelly (Fredericton, NB) to lose sight of the ball and ended up in the net.
The REDS then went on the attack and had a chance when striker Mackenzie Walsh (Middle Sackville, NS) crossed the ball to Heidi Lauwerijssen (Kensington, PE) who was tied up by a Tigers' defender, but it popped out to Jillian Curtis (Corpus Christi, Texas) who sent it wide.
Walsh then drove down into Dal's end of the field and generated another chance, this time finding Aurora Hughes-Goyette (Garibaldi Highlands, BC) who took a shot that was turned away by Dal's keeper.
The Tigers had a chance to add to their lead, but Megan Chiasson (Lower Sackville, NS) skied it over the net from point blank range.
When the referee's whistle blew for half-time, the Tigers led 1-0.
UNB continued their pressure early in the second, when Hughes-Goyette evaded defenders and had a chance to tie the game, but the Tigers' keeper made the save.
In the 62nd minute, UNB found what they were searching for when Hughes-Goyette drove down the right side and forced a corner. That set up a cross from Walsh that found Julia Dalley (Burlington, ON) who put in the equalizer.
In the 74th minute, defender Paris Axam (Ottawa, ON) was fouled just outside the top corner of the box, and on the ensuing free kick, she sent a ball to the top corner of the net where Kelly made a terrific save to keep the game even.
Elsie Evans (Toronto, ON) was found open off a corner kick and tried to get it past the short side, but Kelly once again made the save.
In the 80th minute, Axam found herself with a chance to take the lead on a corner, and she did just that, putting it straight from the corner to the back of the net.
Despite UNB pressing for the rest of the game they never found the answer, falling 2-1.
Leon was named player of the game for the game.
The Tigers next action is Wednesday, at Saint Mary's.
UNB will have next week off and will return to action October 13th against Mount Allison.
