(HALIFAX, NS) The Dalhousie Tigers' women's hockey team beat the University of New Brunswick REDS 2-1, in overtime, on Friday, in Halifax.
The Tigers started the first period with several attacks on goal, and key saves from REDS goaltender, Kendra Woodland (Kamloops, BC).
Payton Hargreaves (Whitby, ON) put the REDS on the board when she shot from the slot off a pass from Frederike Cyr (Candiac, QC) seven minutes into the first period.
The REDS lead stood until late in the game.
After UNB was given a late penalty, Tigers head coach Troy Ryan called what proved to be an important timeout. And a couple of cycles of the puck later, Brooklyn Paisley (Shawnigan Lake, BC) fired a shot wide producing a rebound for Lexie Small (Grand Falls, NL) to pounce on. She scored, forcing overtime.
Following some back and forth during the extra period, a stolen puck by Paisley was played forwarded to a streaking Kennedy Whelan (Alliston, ON). Whelan was in all alone on Woodland and fired home the game-winning goal, glove side.
Whelan was named the Subway Player of the Game.
With a 8-6-1-2 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record, the Tigers will take on the Saint Mary's Huskies in an exhibition match on December 30.
The REDS will play the MacEwan Griffins, at the Clare Drake Arena, on December 30, also in exhibition play.
Both teams return to AUS regular season action when the REDS host the Tigers on January 6, 2023.
