REDS Claim AUS Title
(MONTAGUE, PE) The UNB REDS are the champions of Atlantic University Sport women's curling in 2024.
UNB's Jenna Campbell rink scored a 5-4 win, in an extra end, over the Dalhousie Tigers on Sunday in the gold medal game at the conference championships, in Montague, Prince Edward Island.
"It's an incredible feeling," said Campbell. "This is everything you work for as a student-athlete. All the time spent practicing and improving. It feels amazing to have it all pay off here."
The Tigers opened the game with two points in the first end before the REDS responded with one in the second.
After Dal extended their lead to two in the fourth end, UNB scored singles in the following three ends to pull in front 4-3.
The Tigers sent the game to a ninth end after evening the score in the eighth.
Then, with the hammer, the REDS made it count as they scored to one to end Dal's reign.
"I think patience was the key to our win this afternoon," said Campbell. "We never panicked when we were behind, we never gave up, and we left everything out there. We knew we needed to be at our very best to beat Dal and we brought our A-game."
The REDS now prepare to host the U SPORTS Curling Championships, March 13-17 at UNB's Aitken Centre and they'll do so as AUS champs.
"This ranks at the very top of my curling resume," said Campbell. "This is such a special win for all of us, for Kirsten and Véronique it's the first big win of their curling careers."
Earlier on Sunday, the Campbell rink, which includes lead Rebecca Watson, second Véronique Carroll, third Carly Smith, and alternate Kirsten Donovan, beat Mount Allison 6-4 in semi-final play.
