Veinot Climbs To 7th On AUS Scoring List
(FREDERICTON, NB) Jayda Veinot’s storied Atlantic University Sport regular season career came to an end Saturday afternoon in an amazing 33-point performance that helped the UNB REDS beat the Acadia Axewomen 91-87.
Her 33 points pushed her career regular season total to 1695, good for 7th place on the AUS all-time scoring list.
Veinot played the first three seasons of her U SPORTS career with the Acadia Axewomen, amassing 919 of her 1695 points.
She transferred to UNB ahead of the 2022-23 season to pursue post-graduate studies, playing two more seasons and is exhausting her eligibility this season.
In just two seasons with the REDS, she scored 776 points.
“I was fortunate to play with really great teams, both at Acadia and here,” said Veinot. “I’m excited to be in the all-time top ten, but it’s a testament to my teams and what we were doing all those years.”
Veinot played a total of 90 regular season games during her career, recording 528 rebounds and 255 assists along with her 1695 points.
Erin McAleenan is in her first season as the head coach of the REDS.
She says having someone like Veinot on the roster in her first season on the job has meant a lot.
“It makes it easy, offensively and defensively, when you have a legendary player like that,” said McAleenan. “At the end of the day, it’s get the ball into Jayda’s hands and she’s going to create for herself or others.”
As important as Veinot’s output on the floor, McAleenan says the veteran has provided leadership and stability throughout an up-and-down year for the REDS.
The REDS will look to the saavy veteran to lead them this weekend at the 2024 AUS Women’s Basketball Championship.
After finishing the regular season in second place, UNB has earned a first-round bye. The REDS await the winner of Friday’s quarter-final between Acadia and Memorial in Saturday’s semi-finals.
In ten games (8 with Acadia, 2 with UNB) at four AUS championship tournaments to date, Veinot has scored 198 points in eight wins and two losses.
She was part of two conference championship teams at Acadia, in 2018-19 and 2021-22.
