(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The UNB REDS completed a weekend sweep of the Memorial Sea-Hawks Sunday with a 90-65 win, in St. John's.
Jayda Veinot (Port Williams, NS) led the REDS with 19 points and six rebounds, while Katie McAffee (Lower Knoxford, NB) scored 17 and grabbed six rebounds. McAffee was named Subway Player of the Game.
"We came out today with a lot more defensive intensity and attention to the small details," said McAffee. "We bounced back from a bit of a rocky game yesterday (Saturday). It was a solid team win."
The opening quarter saw the visitors build a 10-point lead, 26-16.
The second featured back-and-forth action, but the REDS were able to hold on to their advantage. UNB took a 48-31 lead to half-time.
The REDS came out strong offensively in the third quarter.
Midway through, Memorial was able to start a bit of a comeback with a 6-0 run, but that was ended on a free throw basket by Erin Ingalls (St. George, NB).
The Sea-Hawks continued to push for the remainder of the third, but UNB stayed strong and led 67-48 heading to the final frame.
An exchange of baskets opened the fourth quarter.
The REDS started to make a push at the halfway mark, highlighted by plays by Veinot and Katie Butts (Ottawa, ON).
The Sea-Hawks were not able to break down UNB's defence, and the REDS went on to take the game 90-65.
Along with Veinot and McAffee, Butts dropped 18 points off the REDS bench.
Alyssa Jenkins (St. John's, NL) and Ines Salat-Margarit (Barcelona, SPA) led the Sea-Hawks, each putting up 14 points.
"We did a great job defensively today," said REDS head coach Jeff Speedy. "Our players executed our game plan very well and it took all the pressure off us offensively."
"I loved the balanced attack we had on offence," he added. "We're a deep team and when we have this many players contributing on offence, we are tough to beat."
With the win, UNB is now 12-7 and will wrap up their regular season schedule on Saturday when they host league-leading Acadia. Game time is 6:00pm.
Memorial is 9-8 and will host UPEI on Friday.
