Howes Runs 7th At National Championship Meet
(LONDON, ON) Jared Howes ran to a 7th place finish in the men's eight-kilometre race at the 2023 U SPORTS Cross Country Championships, in London, on Sunday.
Howse covered the course in a time of 24:48.1, leading UNB, Atlantic University Sport champions, to a 6thplace finish in the team standings.
"The men came in ranked 6th and certainly put themselves in a position to improve on that, but it wasn't in the cards today," said Chris Belof, head coach of the REDS' cross country and track & field teams. "It's a strong result and accomplishment for the group," added Belof.
William Boyle finished 24th in the field of more than 120 runners. He was followed by Mitchell Kean, in 47th, Benjamin Perrett in 58th, Isaac Cull in 83rd, Quinn Eberts in 91st, and Sam Richter in 109th.
"It's a special group of young men," said Coach Belof. "They're committed to each other and ultimately sacrifice individual goals for team results."
By virtue of his top 7 finish, Howse was named a 1st Team All-Canadian.
Runners from Laval finished first and second and the UBC Thunderbirds captured the men's team title.
"It was a special day for the program and a step towards our ultimate objective of being a national contender," said Belof. "It's been a lot of fun to see this group of men and women grow over the years. And I can't say enough about all of the support from UNB's Athletics Department, the New Brunswick athletics community, and our alumni and our supporters. There is a lot of buzz around our teams right now, and we're very grateful for all the support."
