McMorran Joining REDS In 2024
(FREDERICTON, NB) You could say Finn McMorran was born to be a setter on the UNB REDS men’s volleyball team.
His father Dan, now head coach of the REDS, was a standout setter during a distinguished playing career at UNB, and his mother, Amanda, was a talented setter with UNB’s women’s volleyball team.
Finn has REDS volleyball in his genes.
The 6’2” McMorran has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2024-25 RSEQ men’s volleyball season.
“I grew up as a UNB fan and always supported my Dad and his team,” said McMorran. “I went to all the practices and games as a kid and could proudly say that the REDS were my favourite sports team growing up, and they still are.”
“The facilities here are among the best in the country and I’m getting a chance to compete alongside some exciting and talented student-athletes in a program that I know will help me continue to improve. And UNB is close to home and home is where I want to be.”
McMorran is finishing his Grade 12 year at Fredericton High School, where he’s a member of the Black Kats’ varsity boys’ team that won the 2023 provincial championship.
He’s a veteran member of the Reds Volleyball Club, a member of the Volleyball New Brunswick’s High Performance Beach program and was a member of VNB’s Canada Cup team in 2021.
McMorran and his beach partner were provincial men’s champions in 2023 and won the 16U Tier 1 division at Volleyball Canada’s Youth Beach National Championships, in Toronto, the first New Brunswick team to ever win a gold medal at that level.
“Finn is an athletic and skilled player, both offensively and defensively,” said Coach McMorran. “He’s a fierce competitor and his addition brings depth to our setter position. I’ve been fortunate as a father to have had the opportunity to coach my son from a very young age, and even more fortunate that he’s now chosen UNB to start his university playing career.”
Multi-talented, Finn McMorran represented New Brunswick at the 2022 Canada Summer Games, in Niagara, Ontario, in the sport of tennis.
“A couple of short-term goals I have as a RED are to improve my overall game and to win a RSEQ championship,” said Finn. “I’d like to play a part in bringing a national championship to UNB too.”
McMorran, who carries a 95%+ average at high school, will study Engineering while attending UNB.
