Fundy Middle Joining REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s volleyball team is adding 6’3” middle and home-grown talent Charlie Craig to their recruiting class of 2024.
The 17-year-old, from St. George, NB, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2024-2025 RSEQ season.
“At 6’3” he’s not one of the biggest middles on the floor, but he has a great attitude and excellent work ethic and is one of the most naturally gifted athletes I’ve seen in a while,” said REDS’ head coach Dan McMorran.
Craig is finishing his Grade 12 year at Fundy High School where he’s been a standout member of the Mariners’ boy’s volleyball team for four years. In 2022, he was named Fundy Middle High School’s male athlete of the year.
He’s a veteran member of the Reds Volleyball Club, having played at the U18 level in 2022-23 and 2023-24, and is also part of Volleyball New Brunswick’s U17 Canada Cup and provincial team programs.
“I have been fortunate to have played for Coach McMorran over the past two years and have learned a great deal and have improved tremendously,” said Craig. “The UNB facilities are among the best in the country, for academics and athletics, which made my decision easier, especially seeing it's close to home. I'm excited to say I'm a RED!”
Craig has been part of Reds club teams that have captured numerous tournament titles, including the 2023 U18 provincial championship.
In 2023, he was named the Reds most improved player.
“As an athlete on the floor, my competitiveness will continue to be a strength of mine,” said Craig. “Off the floor, my persistent work ethic and desire to be great will be an asset. As a teammate, I think my personality contributes to an enjoyable environment and I hope to bring the same energy as a RED.”
“I met Charlie a couple of summers ago when he made the Canada Cup team I took to Calgary and have since coached him the past two club seasons,” said Coach McMorran. “As he gains some valuable volleyball experience, it will be exciting to watch his trajectory.”
Craig says his short-term goals include working hard in the classroom and on the court.
Long-term, he says helping UNB win conference and national championships are on his list.
He’ll study Business Administration while attending UNB.
