(SYDNEY, NS) The Cape Breton University Capers beat the UNB Reds 2-1 on Friday, in the Atlantic University Sport 2019 season opener for both teams.

The first half featured tough play and great back and forth action.

In the 19thminute, Peter Schaale (Bernkastel-Kues, GER) finished a nice play to put the hosts up 1-0.

UNB's Ben Gorringe (Mount Uniacke, NS) evened the score in the 35thminute, a goal that seemed to ignite the Reds who pushed for more, but couldn't connect.

Cory Bent (Preston, UK) scored for CBU in the 50th minute, finishing a nice cross.

Despite the score, Reds keeper Evan Barker (Winnipeg, MB) made several saves to keep the game close.

In the dying minutes of the game, the Reds Tristan Nkoghe (Sherbrooke, QC) broke through the Capers defence, but keeper Ben Jackson (Bury, UK) managed to make the save, preserving the 2-1 Cape Breton victory.

Bent was named the Subway Player of the Game.

The Reds are scheduled to play at St FX on Sunday, while Cape Breton is scheduled to host UPEI.
