REDS Name Grouse To Class Of '24
(FREDERICTON, NB) THE UNB REDS men’s basketball team is naming 5’11’ point guard Kaymon Grouse to their recruiting class of 2024.
The 18-year-old Halifax native, finishing his Grade 12 year at Dartmouth High School, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2024-2025 Atlantic University Sport season.
“We’re all really excited about Kaymon joining our program,” said REDS’ head coach Joe Salerno. “We felt strongly that he was the most talented player coming out of Nova Scotia this year and that he has all the tools to be a very good player in the AUS and at the U SPORTS level.”
Grouse was a member of multiple provincial age division championship teams at the club level and helped Halifax’s Citadel High School to School Sport Nova Scotia Capital Region titles in 2022 and 2023.
In 2023 and 2024, Grouse was named a Capital Region all-star.
He was selected to Team Nova Scotia sides for national tournaments in 2020, at the U15 level, and 2022, at the U17 level.
“It’s a place where I immediately felt I could be successful both on the court and in the classroom,” said Grouse. “UNB has a really supportive environment and has a real family vibe that I really liked, and everyone is trying to constantly better themselves and everyone around them.”
“Coach Salerno was really consistent in the recruiting process,” he added. “He believed in me from day one.”
Before transferring to Dartmouth High, Grouse was the MVP at Citadel High in 2023, and he was part of the first team in Nova Scotia history to compete at the Jr. NBA Canadian qualifiers, in 2018.
“I’m going to come in and work as hard as I can, every day,” said Grouse. “I’m going to bring good shooting, play-making, and positive energy. I believe this is a team that can be one of the best in the country in the coming years. I’m going to be the best teammate I can be.”
Grouse says his short-term goals include helping UNB win an AUS championship. Longer-term, he says he’d like to help the REDS win a national title.
“He’s someone who wants to win, and wants to win at everything he does,” said Coach Salerno. “He has a very strong work ethic and desire to continue to improve daily. I think he’s a natural scorer, but also possesses the physical tools to be a great playmaker, creating shots for others. I really look forward to seeing his progress over his years here at UNB.”
Grouse will study Sociology while attending UNB.
