(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The Memorial Sea-Hawks scored an 86-77 win over the UNB REDS on Sunday, salvaging a weekend split of their two-game series.
The game opened with a three-point shot by Memorial's River Drefers (Auckland, NZ), but the REDS countered immediately with a layup from Marcus Barnes (Kitchener, ON).
A 7-0 run gave the Sea-Hawks an eight-point lead midway through the quarter, and they were able to end the quarter leading 21-14.
An exchange of baskets marked the beginning of the second quarter, and continued until the halfway point when the Sea-Hawks were able to push their lead to a dozen.
Three three-pointers from Eden Otshudi (Hamilton, ON) gave UNB some energy, but Memorial led 46-38 at the half.
The Sea-Hawks went on an 8-0 run early in the third quarter.
A jump shot by Barnes ended that run, and another trio of three-pointers, this time by Barnes, helped to cut the Sea-Hawks lead to 12, late in the quarter.
Tight play ensued for the remainder of the third, with Memorial leading 69-59 heading to the final frame.
Another three from Barnes opened the scoring in the fourth.
Back-and-forth play continued until Norm Burry (Grafton, NB) scored four unanswered points that brought the REDS within four points of the lead midway through the quarter. But the REDS couldn't complete the comeback and the Sea-Hawks escaped with the 86-77 victory.
Memorial's Flynn Boardman-Raffet (London, UK) was named Subway Player of the Game.
He finished with eight point, four rebounds and three assists.
Nicholas Tuff (St. John's, NL) scored a game-high 28 points for MUN.
Barnes led the REDS with 24 points, while Otshudi had 15 and Burry 14.
The Sea-Hawks are now 8-10 and sit sixth in the Atlantic University Sport standings.
Memorial hosts UPEI on Friday in the first of a two-game weekend series.
The REDS, now 7-12 and in fifth place, host Acadia on Saturday in their regular season finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00pm.
