Black Kat Burry Joining Reds
(FREDERICTON, NB) Norm Burry came to Fredericton to play for the Fredericton High School Black Kats.
He’ll stay in Fredericton to play for the UNB Reds.
Burry, a 6’4” forward, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the Reds ahead of the 2020-21 Atlantic University Sport season.
“As a kid, the people I’d looked up to, I’d hear about them signing with UNB, so to be a part of that, it’s something special,” said Burry. “I like their program. I’ve watched a lot of their games this season. They’ve got a good team, good coaches, and I know I’ll get a good education here.”
Reds head coach Brent Baker is excited to have a commitment from a player many see as a blue-chip prospect.
“Norm is a big get for our program,” said Baker. “He comes in physically and mentally ready to play at the U SPORTS level, but more importantly, he’s a high character individual. His work ethic on and off the court will definitely impact our line-up in a positive manner.”
At the 2019 U17 national championship, played at UNB’s Currie Center, Burry helped Team New Brunswick to a bronze medal, averaging 20.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, earning 1st Team All-Star status. Burry was fourth in the national championships in average scoring and second in average rebounds. He was the most fouled player in the tournament, and led the championship in free throws made, with 32.
“To play on this court again is special to me,” said Burry. “I know that feeling I felt this past summer, playing here. Hopefully, I can feel something like that again.”
Burry and the Black Kats are preparing for another trip to the NBIAA Final 12. During the Kats’ regular season, he averaged 23 points and nine rebounds per game.
“He’s one of the premier players in the Maritimes, and we feel very fortunate to have him join our program, as he was heavily recruited by a number of other programs from across the country,” said Baker.
“I’ll bring a lot energy on the defensive end, and I’ll lead by example,” said Burry.
He’ll pursue a Bachelor of Science degree while attending UNB.
