REDS On To ACAA Championship
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS are heading back to the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association women’s rugby championship after defeating the University of King’s College Blue Devils 94-10 on Saturday afternoon, at UNB’s College Field.
UNB’s front row played a key factor in their win over UKC. The REDS were able to find gaps in the Blue Devils' defence that opened them up for a number of large runs to build a quick lead.
Alex Morrell led the way for UNB, scoring three tries. Her best on the day came late in the first half when she found a hole in the UKC defence and was able to capitalize on for a big run.
“It felt really good to take the win in today’s game,” said Morrell. “We know that when we play King’s we’re always going to be in for a tough game despite the score. Of focus was to be the first in on each ball, be ready for every tackle, improve our rucks and support each other, and I thought we did a great job with that today.”
Megan Stewart also had three tries for the REDS, while Alexa Pelletier, Ella Myers, Taylor McAuley, Katherine Maxwell, Alicia Simmie and Emily Thornton each netted a try for UNB.
Kate Bennett converted nine kicks in the game while also netting three tries of her own.
Amelia Jardine was the lone scorer for the Blue Devils. She was able to score two tries in a losing effort.
The REDS will now set their sights on a 7th consecutive ACAA championship, next Saturday when they face the winner of the other semi-final, between the Mount Allison Mounties and Holland College Hurricanes.
“It's surreal,” said Morrell. “It’s still surprising to be able to make it this far as a team. We treat every game the same and any team we play we know will be bringing their best, so we have to be prepared for next Saturday.”
The championship game will take place at College Field, with kickoff set for 2:00pm.
