(ANTIGONISH, NS) Hannah Cormier ran to an 8th place finish to lead the UNB Reds in Saturday's St FX Invitational, the first race of the 2019 Atlantic University Sport Cross Country season.

Cormier covered the six-kilometre course in 22:49.12, about 55 seconds back of winner Jane Hergett, of the St FX X-Women.

“Hannah followed the race plan well,” said Reds head coach Chris Belof. “She moved up where she needed to and could, and executed a controlled effort.”

The AUS season was supposed to have opened two weeks ago, but the SMU/Dal Invitational was cancelled because of Hurricane Dorian.

Other Reds finishers included Lynette Manuel (24th), Caroline Burpee (28th), Emmanuelle Martin (32nd), and Hannah Haynes-MacDonald (34th).

48 runners competed.

“There will be bigger races this season, but this sets our women up very well,” said Belof. “Hannah Cormier displayed podium potential.”

The next race on the AUS schedule is the Acadia Invitational, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, on Saturday, October 5th, 2019.
