Huskies Beat REDS In Straight Sets

(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The Saint Mary's Huskies scored a 3-0 win over the UNB REDS on Saturday, at the Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball league tournament, in St. John's.

Saint Mary's won with scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-23).

The Huskies were able to jump out to an early lead in the opening set, taking an 11-5 lead and holding on to take the opening set 25-19.

The REDS would respond early on in the second set, taking an early 4-0 lead and trying to hold on.

Despite their best efforts, the Huskies, thanks to a stretch of seven consecutive points would win the set 25-17.

UNB was able to grab a lead in the crucial third set, going in front 14-9, but were unable to hold it, falling 25-23.

"Today was a complete opposite match and result to what we had last night," said REDS head coach Richard Schick.

On Friday, the REDS scored a straight sets win over weekend host Memorial.

"From the get-go, we were made to feel uncomfortable by our own play."

First year REDS Heather Benko (Sechelt, BC) and Jenna Adams (Truro, NS) led the UNB effort with nine kills and 11 digs respectively.

Paige Lehto (North Vancouver, BC) did her best to keep the REDS in the match with an impressive 19 assists.

SMU's Olivia Bell was dominant, recording a game-high 15 kills and adding seven digs.

"It was ugly today, said Schick. "We just have to look to rebound on Sunday, against Dal. It's another big test for our group."

With the loss, the REDS are now 4-4 and tied for second in the AUS standings.

Saint Mary's also sits second, with a 4-3 record.

The Huskies conclude the weekend tournament with a match against the host Memorial Sea-Hawks at 2:30pm Atlantic.

The REDS take on Dalhousie. First serve is scheduled for 10:30am Atlantic.
