(SAINT JOHN, NB) Lexie Shannon began the 2022-23 university track and field season much the same way she ended the last one… on top of the medal podium.

Shannon, the 2022 U SPORTS Champion in the women's triple jump, leapt an impressive 11.82 metres to win the women's triple jump at UNB's Red & Black Open, at the Irving Oil Fieldhouse, in Saint John, on the weekend.

Shannon's early season leap is just 3/10ths of a metre off her national championship winning distance.

Teams from l'Université de Moncton, UPEI, Cape Breton and STFX joined the REDS at the meet.

Other REDS highlights included Carys Jacobson and Shelby MacIsaac running first and second in the women's 60 metres. At the finish line, the two were separated by just 1/100th of a second.

UNB's Abigail Passy won the women's pole vault passing a height of 3.05 metres.

"We saw some impressive opening marks this weekend," said REDS head coach Chris Belof. "They'll all be highly ranked on the U SPORTS early season list."
