(WOLFVILLE, NS) A header goal by Rebecca LeBlanc (Sydney, NS) in the 85th minute handed the Acadia Axewomen a 2-1 win over the visiting UNB REDS in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer, on Saturday evening.

LeBlanc's goal, her first of the season, came off a Meghan Johnston (Dartmouth, NS) corner kick that was pulled down by LeBlanc, deflected and eventually headed by LeBlanc for the game-winning goal.

"The first half was a little rough, but we came out harder in the second half," said LeBlanc. "We had a talk in the locker room (at the half). We needed to play quicker, get open more and move off the ball. We were not moving off the ball as much in the first half, but did so the second half."

LeBlanc was named Subway Player of the Game.

The REDS opened the game with an early goal at the 22-minute mark. Alexandra Hughes-Goyette (Garibaldi Highlands, BC) tapped in a great cross from teammate and sister Aurora Hughes-Goyette for the 1-0 lead.

The Axewomen tied the game in the 39th minute when Meghan Johnston (Dartmouth, NS) sent a nice pass that slipped past a UNB defender, giving Abbey Aucoin (Dartmouth, NS) a shot to the lower right corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season.

Acadia pressured hard in the second half, taking 14 shots in the last 45 minutes.

Brynn Nash (Saskatoon, SK) was tested with eight shots on goal in the first half.

Milena Ramirez (Wolfville, NS) was solid with two saves from three shots.

The Axewomen improve to 8-2-1 and slip into second place in the AUS standings, while the REDS drop to 2-4-4.

Acadia will visit Mount Allison on Friday, their final game of the regular season.

UNB plays at Cape Breton and STFX, Thursday and Friday.
