(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The Memorial Sea-Hawks were able to wrap up a weekend sweep of the UNB REDS with a 1-0 win on Sunday.

With the win, Memorial improves to 6-2-0 while the REDS are now 1-5-2.

In a game where everything was heavily contested in the defensive zone, every potential scoring chance was crucial, and those were few and far between.

Early in the game, the Sea-Hawks were able to capitalize on their first scoring chance on a tremendous through ball by Kate Hickey (Outer Cove, NL) to Holly O'Neill (St. John's, NL), who found the back of the net in just the sixth minute.

Both teams struggled to establish consistent possession in the offensive zones, and that was the main reason for the score line.

UNB controlled the play for the majority of the second half while the Sea-Hawks clung to their 1-0 lead. But while possession was carried by the REDS, they had trouble creating chances due to the Sea-Hawks stout defence.

REDS midfielder Jesse Bellamy (St. Catharines, ON) was creating the majority of the chances for her side, credited with a team high two shots on goal.

Defence can be an aspect of the game that is underrated, but the way both the Sea-Hawks and REDS defended in this game shows just how important solid defensive play is.

UNB outshot the Sea-Hawks 8-4.

Memorial midfielder Bethany Hynes (Paradise, NL) was named the Subway Player of the Game.

The Sea-Hawks see their next action on October 22nd, when they visit UPEI.

The REDS host the Saint Mary's Huskies on October 15th, at Canada Games Stadium, in Saint John. That game starts at 4:00pm.
