(FREDERICTON, N.B) The UNB Varsity Reds women's soccer team tied the Dalhousie Tigers 0-0 in regular season action on BMO Field in Fredericton.
This is the third tie for UNB so far this season, who started the regular play with a pair of ties last weekend against Cape Breton and StFX. Dalhousie now stands at 0-1-2, after opening with two losses versus Acadia and Mount Allison.
Last year, UNB finished the 2014 regular season in first place with a record of 10-1-2 – their sole loss that season coming at the hands of the Tigers. The Tigers finished the 2014 regular season in fifth place with a record of 6-4-3.
The first half ended scoreless and saw both teams testing each other, with a lot of back and forth and only a few dangerous chances.
The second half opened with Dalhousie controlling possession for the majority of the first 20 minutes. UNB fought back and put up a couple of good chances around the 73rd minute.
But it would be Dalhousie's Madison Frechette (Markham, Ont.) who nearly made it 1-0 for the Tigers with a great opportunity around the 84th minute. She cleanly beat the UNB defence to see her shot sail just wide.
In the last five minutes UNB would also have two great scoring chances, both off corner kicks. But the V-Reds couldn't connect and the game would end scoreless.
Player of the Game for UNB was Paige Vincent (Dartmouth, N.S.). Player of the Game for Dalhousie was Amanda Bowles (Burlington, Ont.).
UNB head coach Jon Crossland says the game was a tough one for the squad.
"Largely we were frustrated for most of the game," Crossland said. "In the second half we changed the formation, put some players in some different spots and created some opportunities."
"The positive take-away is that when we do the things that we have been working on and play at a good tempo and quality we execute."
Player of the Game Vincent said she thinks the regular season still looks promising for the Varsity Reds. "Although we came out a little slow, the positive is that we progressively got better."
The Varsity Reds play next when they host SMU at 1pm tomorrow.
The Tigers now head to Moncton where they will play les Aigles Bleues at the same time.
