Season opens with 1-1 draw with CBU

(Sydney, N.S.) It was a slow start to the AUS women's soccer season for the Cape Breton University Capers who battled the visiting University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds to a 1-1 draw in their home opener Saturday.

The Capers opened the scoring first when third-year midfielder Tamara Brown found the back of the net in the 29th minute.

A late scramble inside the 18-yard box opened the door for the Varsity Reds and Lauren Cubbon pulled the visitors even in the 44th minute to send the two teams to the dressing room deadlocked at one apiece.

The second half featured several scoring opportunities for both sides, but neither was able to net the winner.

Rachel Yerxa made four saves in her first game with the Capers while Sami-Jo Nell turned aside three shots for the Varsity Reds.

The Capers (0-0-1) will host Moncton (0-1-0) in a 1 p.m. start Sunday while UNB (0-0-1) will face StFX (1-0-0) in Antigonish.
