UNB defeats StFX in AUS women’s soccer

(ANTIGONISH, NS) - On the strength of two second-half goals by striker Sam Lagacy (Moncton, NB), the first place UNB Varsity Reds defeated the StFX X-Women 3-1 in AUS women's soccer action Friday evening at Oland Stadium in Antigonish.

In front of more than 200 fans, Lagacy, the Subway player of the match, broke a 1-1 tie in the 60th minute, when she got behind the X-Women defenders before putting a nifty deke on X-Women keeper Erin Visser (Whitby, ON) and depositing a left-footed shot into the open net.

Lagacy, on a set-up from Meggie Spicer (Spencer's Island, NS), scored the insurance marker in the 75th minute.

The best scoring chance for the X-Women in the second half came in the 77th minute from a Brianna Cuzzolino (Oakville, ON) header off a cross, with Sami Jo Bell (East Dover, NS) making the save.

The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.

Freshman Margaux Fraser (Mississauga, ON) opened the scoring for the X-Women in the second minute of the match. The forward pushed a shot by a charging Bell off a through ball from midfielder Danielle Aucoin (Lower Sackville, NS).

Kayla Painter (Fredericton, NB) knotted the score in the 37th minute off a pass from Lucy Parkin (Sheffield, UK).

The Varsity Reds (5-0-1) return to action Saturday, Sept 27, when they visit the Mount Allison Mounties (1-2-3) in Sackville, NB.

The X-Women (2-2-2) will host the Cape Breton University Capers (3-1-1) Sunday, Sept. 28. Match time is 1 p.m. at Oland Stadium.
