(FREDERICTON, NB) UNB REDS scored a 4-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action Sunday, at UNB's Aitken Centre.

The game was the final home game of the regular season for the REDS, who've locked up first place for the second consecutive season.

Prior to the game, the REDS recognized nine graduating student athletes prior to the game.

"It was pretty emotional to see them pull on that jersey for the last time for their home regular season careers," said REDS head coach Sarah Hilworth. "I think at the same time we are pretty optimistic that we are going to continue on here and, you know, I think there are more games to be played with this group."

The game started slow, with the first period ending scoreless, albeit the REDS having triple the number of shots as the Mounties.

The REDS opened the scoring just over a minute into the second period with a goal by Tamina Kehler (Chilliwack, BC), assisted by Ashley Stratton (Mount Pearl, NL).

"It was pretty big for all of us," said Kehler, one of the nine seniors recognized before the game. "We have so many graduating players, so it was kind of nice to just get to come together and play for each other today."

The REDS lead was then doubled about two minutes later with a goal by third year forward Melanie Drost (Nepean, ON), assisted by Alayna Wagstaff (Olds, AB) and Marley Van Den Oetelaar (Whitby, ON).

Jenna McLean (Wilcox, SK) put away a beautiful shot from just inside the blue line at 15:09 in the second period to increase the REDS lead to 3-0.

Dallis Mackenzie (Trenton, ON) closed out the second period, scoring a goal for the Mounties with 8.1 seconds remaining, ending the period with a 3-1 lead for the REDS.

Lillian George (Nipissing First Nation) scored the lone goal of the third period to give the REDS a 4-1 victory.

"It feels good, obviously that was what we were hoping for and we grinded it out and got the W, so we're looking forward to the next couple games and playoffs," said Kehler.

Drost was named Subway Player of the Game.

The win brings the REDS to a 20-2-1-2 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record with two games to go in their regular season.

UNB and Mount Allison will skate in a re-match, in Sackville, on Wednesday. Game time is 7:00pm.
