(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The Memorial Sea Hawks scored a 67-49 win over the UNB Reds in the 2019-20 Atlantic University Sport season-opener for both teams.

Using a high-pressure defense and fast-break offense, the Sea Hawks limited the Reds chances, while scoring almost freely.

Hallie Nickerson (Grimsby, ON) led the Sea Hawks offensively, scoring 13 points, while Sammi Deakin-Sharpe (Brisbane, Australia) added 12 off the bench. Deakin-Sharpe also collected eight rebounds.

None of the UNB starters scored more than seven points, with newcomer Jolianne Guay (Prevost, QC) leading the Reds with 11 points off the bench.

Krystal Osburn (Nottawa, ON) grabbed nine rebounds.

Turnovers were a factor, as the Reds turned the ball over 22 times, 18 times in the first half alone.

After a difficult first half, UNB began the third quarter on a bit of a roll, but Memorial managed to weather the storm and maintain their lead.

The Sea Hawks held the Reds to just seven points in the fourth quarter on route to their win.

Deakin-Sharpe was named the Subway Player of the Game.

The Sea Hawks host the Reds in the second game of their weekend series on Sunday. Game time is 11:30am Atlantic.
