Varsity Reds Dominate Panthers

(FREDERICTON, NB) The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds women's basketball team trumped the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers, 70-59 Friday, at the Richard J. Currie Center.

 

To start, the Joyce Slipp Scholarship was presented to Grace Wade, in recognition of the dedication and hard-work she brings to the UNB team.

 

In the first quarter, both teams were evenly matched, and UNB trailed by five.

 

UNB stole the momentum in the second quarter, with key baskets from Wade, taking a 37-22 lead to the half.

 

In the third quarter, UNB continued its strong play and held the lead with solid defence and a few tricky steals by Hannah Currie.

 

The Varsity Reds would hold the lead through the fourth, defeating the Panthers 70-59.

 

The Subway player of the game was UNB's Rachel Cleary, with 16 points and 5 rebounds.

 

The Varsity Reds sit in fourth place in the AUS standings, and have clinched a playoff berth.

 

They face Acadia on Saturday, in UNB's final home game of the season, before heading to Halifax, and the Scotiabank Centre, venue for the AUS Championships, March 4th-6th.

 

Saturday's game will tip off at 6:00PM.
