(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS men’s cross country team is celebrating individual and team success following the U SPORTS Championship, in Halifax, on Saturday.

UNB’s Jared Howse ran to an 8th place finish in the men’s eight-kilometre race.

“The course was tough and the conditions were bad, but after a slow start, I ended up making the right moves to put myself in a position to get a top ten finish,” said Howse, named a 2nd Team All-Canadian with his top ten finish.

Howse led UNB to an 11th place finish in the team standings.

“It’s good steps for our men’s program,” said REDS head coach Chris Belof. “We were hoping they’d be in the top ten, as a team, but they navigated the challenging conditions well.”

Saturday’s national championship meet, hosted by the Dalhousie Tigers, was held in the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole.

Wind and rain pelted competitors throughout the day.

Mitchell Kean and Ben Perrett ran 64th and 65th for UNB, in a field of 157 runners.

Sam Lamont was 77th and William Boyle finished 90th.

“I’m really excited about the future of our program and all the opportunities coming up during the indoor season,” said Howse.

The race was won by Max Turek, of McMaster. The Marauders, with two top three finishers, won the team title.
