(STRATFORD, PE) UNB's Jared Howse ran to a silver medal in the men's 8-kilometre race at Saturday's Subway Atlantic University Sport Cross Country Championships, in Stratford, Prince Edward Island.

The event was hosted by the UPEI Panthers.

Howse finished second behind Andrew Peverill, of the Saint Mary's Huskies, who won his third consecutive AUS Cross Country gold medal.

"Andrew's an excellent athlete and was right with me," said Howse. "I managed to take care of the gaps and finish in second place."

While Peverill won by almost 20 seconds, he and Howse engaged in a head-to-head fight over most of the course.

"I knew he felt good, just by looking at him, so I tried to keep something, even though he was behind me, to keep pulling myself along," said Howse. "I tried to gear myself up for when he made his move and I just gave everything I had left to make it to the finish line."

The REDS Mitchell Kean was 9th and Sam Lamont 10th to help UNB finish second in the team standings, behind Dalhousie and ahead of the STFX X-Men.

Rounding out the team standings were the Huskies, Memorial, Moncton and the host Panthers.
