(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB men’s volleyball team is adding 6’4” middle blocker Isaac Jewett to their recruiting class of 2023.

The 17-year-old Fredericton native has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2023-2024 RSEQ season.

“Isaac is a physical, multi-sport athlete who has just started to narrow his focus on volleyball over the past couple of years,” said REDS head coach Dan McMorran. “As he continues to improve technically and gain experience, he has the potential to make contributions in a couple of positions.”

Jewett is coming off a 2022 Canada Summer Games appearance where he helped Team NB to a 7th place finish.

Currently finishing his Grade 12 year at Fredericton’s Leo Hayes High School, Jewett is a veteran member of the varsity boys’ team there and was a key component of the Lions’ 2022 New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association championship run.

“Being from Fredericton, I grew up watching UNB and wanting to play for the REDS,” said Jewett. “After Coach McMorran invited me to an open gym with the team this past summer, I felt welcomed and loved the challenge of playing against the team. From then on, I knew that UNB was the right fit for me.”

Jewett was also a member of the Spartans Volleyball Club’s 2021 U18 provincial club championship-winning team.

“He’s a great young man who also excels academically, and we’re excited to add yet another excellent student-athlete to our program,” said Coach McMorran.

Jewett describes himself as a versatile player who can handle a number of positions and who is always looking to improve. He’s promising to share his energy with the team and make a positive impact.

“Short term, I want to become the best player that I can be,” said Jewett. “I want to show I can compete and succeed at the U SPORTS level. I hope to, eventually, compete for a national championship with the REDS.”

Jewett will study Business while attending UNB.
