(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The defending AUS champion UNB Varsity Reds dropped the Memorial Sea-Hawks in three sets, Saturday.
The Sea-Hawks swooped to an early 12-10 lead in the first set before the defending champs went on a 5-1 run.
The teams traded points to 21-21 before fifth year hitter Elvind Andersen(Sandnes, NOR) delivered three of his five kills in the set to close out the Sea-Hawks 25-23.
In the second set, the Varsity Reds gained control on a 6-0 run to push ahead 22-16. UNB was once again led by Andersen, who hammered home another six kills including the final point off a tremendous set from Samuel Alves(Melbourne, AUS).
UNB won the second set 25-18.
The Sea-Hawks dropped the final set 25-23, despite jumping out to a 5-1 lead.
Memorial extended their lead to 20-16, then 22-21, before UNB rallied.
UNB secured the win on a Sea-Hawks attacking error, sending the home town crowd home empty handed.
The Sea-Hawks were led by Liam Power(Lower Sackville, NS) with 16 kills, a single ace and 7 digs.
Reigning AUS MVP Elvind Andersen led the way for UNB with 17 kills, 7 digs and 2 block assists.
The teams are back in action on Sunday, at 1:00PM Atlantic.
