Spartans Take Down VReds

(FREDERICTON, NB) The Trinity Western University Spartans got a better start Friday, and never really let up, beating the UNB Varsity Reds 3-1, in exhibition play.

Playing their second pre-season match in as many nights, the two teams traded the first two sets.

The Spartans and Varsity Reds looked evenly matched in the first game. They traded the lead or were tied until Trinity Western took control late, winning 25-23.

The VReds rallied in the second, to square the match.

UNB led by as much as seven, which forced the visitors to take a time-out. The Spartans then reeled off six straight points, making the score 21-20.

The home side held on to win 25-22.

The third set was another close one.

Trinity Western scored the final three points of the set, salvaging a 27-25 win.

The Spartans rallied from a 3-0 hole early in the fourth set, before cruising to a 25-15 win, and the match.

Ryan Sclater(Port Coquitlam, BC) led the visitors with a game-high 23 kills and 10 digs.

Ben Lieuwen(Abbotsford, BC) had 17 kills, while Carter Bergen(Winnipeg, MB) contributed 16 digs.

Tristen Burridge(Fort St. John, BC) led the Varsity Reds with 15 digs and 9 kills.

Eivind Anderson(Sandnes, NOR) had 12 digs and 8 kills, while Pascal McCarthy(Fredericton, NB) registered 10 kills.
