(MONCTON, NB) The UNB Reds swept the medal podium in the women's triple jump, at the Subway Atlantic University Sport Track and Field Championships, in Moncton, on Friday.

Lexie Shannon won the event, covering 11.70 metres. She beat Reds teammate Victoria LeBlanc 3/10th of a metre. UNB's Erin McCavour took the bronze medal.

On the men's side, UNB athletes scored a pair of gold medals.

Jarod Manuel won the men's shot put, with a put of 15.04 metres, and Brandon Cleghorn established a new UNB record in winning the men's long jump with a leap of 6.62 metres.

Sydney MacDonald scored silver medals in the women's high jump and in the indoor pentathlon.

Michael Colford ran second in the men's 3000 metres.

Eric Hughes earned the silver medal in the men's 60-metre hurdles, and Braden Harrison captured the bronze medal in the men's 300-metres.

"It was a very strong first day," said Reds head coach Chris Belof. "Some ups and downs, but everyone responded to the challenge of the day very well.  Jarod Manuel won the shot put with a season best and personal best, and Brandon Cleghorn showed what a great performer he really is, setting a new school record."

UNB sits second in the men's standings after day of competition, with 43 points. The Reds are just 14 points back of the Dal Tigers.

The Reds are third in the women's standings, with 39 points. Dal leads with 71 and St FX is second, with 60.

"The sweep in the women's triple jump was a really special thing for our program," said Belof. "Lexie, Victoria, and Erin have done a great job all year of working hard and continually improving. It's speaks volumes to our jumps program and the work that Carl McIntosh has been doing. That really was the highlight of the meet for us so far."

Competition concludes on Saturday.
