(FREDERICTON, NB) The Dalhousie Tigers lead the combined team standings after day one of the 2022 Amby Legere Invitational, at UNB, the first meet of the Atlantic University Sport swimming season.

With 968 points, Dal leads Acadia, the host UNB REDS and the Mount Allison Mounties.

Dal also sits atop the men's and women's standings following day one of the meet.

Tigers' swimmers won 10 of the day's 18 events, including podium sweeps in the women's and men's 400-metre individual medley events.

Dal's Noah Mascoll-Gomes won the men's 100 and 200 metre freestyle races, while the Tigers' Reagan Crowell won the women's 50 and 100 freestyles.

In the women's 50-free, UNB newcomer Élodie Martin finished third, scoring a podium finish in her AUS debut.

Another UNB newcomer, Ethan Nestoruk, won the men's 50-metre breaststroke, edging Acadia's Gordon Shortt by 2/10ths of a second.

"They wanted to race, and I think they've come here wanting to prove themselves and it shows right now," said REDS head coach Marta Belsh, of Martin's and Nestoruk's performances.

Acadia's Shane Kenny won the men's 50-free, beating teammate Cameron Ingo by 3/10ths of a second. Kenny also swam to victory in the men's 100-metre butterfly.

Other Acadia winners included Kassidy Hamilton, in the women's 100-metre butterfly, Sophie Rooney, in the women's 200-metre backstroke, Ella Collins, in the women's 50-metre breaststroke, Dean Sangster, in the men's 200-metre backstroke, and Shortt, in the men's 100-metre breaststroke.

"We're really happy with both the men and the women," said Acadia head coach Kris Bell. "We have a huge rookie contingent and they're showing well. Sophie Rooney made the U SPORTS cut in the 200-back and is challenging right away, putting her stamp on the AUS."

Dal's Kat Tuck won the women's 200-metre freestyle and 100-metre breaststroke, while Dalhousie's Ella Dobson and Logan Sparkes won the women's and men's 800-metre freestyle events respectively.

The meet concludes Sunday, with timed finals beginning at 10:00am.
