Reds 3rd After Day One At Acadia Meet

(WOLFVILLE, NS) The UNB Reds had a decent first day of competition at the second meet on the 2019-20 Atlantic University Sport swimming schedule.

The Reds recorded seven top three finishes on day one of the Jack Scholz Memorial, hosted by Acadia University.

The event opened with the women's and men's 200 metre medley relays.

In the women's event, Leah Smal, Nikki Connors, Hannah Casey, and Jennifer Moore swam to a third place finish.

The men were also third, with Ahmed Helal, Noah Horwood, Erik Staeben and Zach Doiron in the pool.

UNB was third in both the women's and men's 4-by-100 metre freestyle relays.

Moore, Lauren Goodine, Alexie Sanford, and Smal were in the pool for the Reds women, while Horwood, Helal, Michael Walz, and Staeben swam the men's race.

In individual events, Smal was second in the women's 200 metre individual medley and third in the women's 400 metre freestyle.

Horwood took second in the men's 50 metre breaststroke, finishing just 25/100ths of a second back of the winner.

“We had a very good first session,” said Reds head coach Marta Belsh. “Alexie Sanford had a couple of great races that show promise. She’s getting better at sprint and middle distance races. The men’s team had strong showings in the relay events.”

After the first day of competition, the Reds sit third in the overall team standings.

Day two begins at 10:00am on Sunday morning.
