Reds Blank U de M In AUS QFs

(SYDNEY, NS) The UNB Reds are through to the semi-final round at the 2018 Subway AUS Men’s Soccer Championship, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, after a 3-0 quarter- final win over l’Universitè de Moncton Aigles Bleus.

Veteran striker and AUS first team all-star Dan Walker (Fredericton, NB) opened the scoring with the eventual game-winner in the 14th minute.

The Reds took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Just before half time, Moncton’s Sebastien Hebert (Moncton, NB) received a second yellow card for dangerous tackles. The subsequent red card put les Aigles Bleus down to ten men.

UNB took advantage in the second half, scoring twice.

Third-year midfielder Matt Quigley (Conquerall Mills, N.S.) added to UNB’s lead with a goal in the 64th minute, assisted by AUS Rookie of the Year Tristan Nkoghe (Sherbrooke, QC).

The Reds third and final goal came from second-year striker Grant Takacs (Woodstock, ON), assisted by Maximus Manhu (Markham, ON) in the 87th minute.

UNB keeper Evan Barker (Winnipeg, MB) earned the victory for the Reds.

Moncton’s Christian Masimengo (Dieppe, NB) took the loss.

Walker, who scored a goal on three shots, was named Subway Player of the Game.

The Reds will now face the second seed St FX X-Men in a Friday semi-final. Game time is 7:00pm.

UNB and X met just once during the regular season, on September 8th, opening weekend, in Antigonish.

The X-Men earned a 2-0 win that day.
